The 'Thief' Books

Sometime in the mid 1990's I began writing what I envisioned to be a series of books about the mis-adventures of a pickpocket called Jake living in the fantastical war-torn land of Anhedonika.  I was influenced by books such as Titus Alone by Mervyn Peake and Angela Carter's The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffmann  The character of Jake, and his story, stayed with me through various life-changes and house moves and it wasn't until around 2011 that I'd knocked the first book, Thief's Return, into some kind of shape.  The second book, Thief's Fortune, was written much quicker and released in 2013.  I am making tentative plans for a third book.

In the first book, the theft of a figurine leads to Jake being given an important mission.  Along the way, he meets a rich cast of characters - of whom some live, some die, some want to help, some want to harm.  Jake falls in and out of the beds of various women, he falls in love, he is hunted, trapped, aided to escape, and on the run.

Always on the run.

Book 1: THIEF'S RETURN

Set in the war-torn world of Anhedonika, Thief's Return introduces Jake, a nineteen-year old pickpocket. Jake has been arrested and is on his way to Rotuhel, a vast crumbling prison situated on an island off the coast of his homeland. There he will come across a cast of characters who will change the course of his life. Jake's most important encounters, though, will be with Sarah, the kind-hearted preacher's charge; and Jon Bragwen, the mysterious old man who Jake, without realising it, has drawn to the prison. It is both Sarah and Bragwen who will give force to Jake's desire to escape from the prison, but not before there has been murder and revenge, stirrings of love, and promises made. Unknowingly, Jake has placed himself at the centre of a plot to bring about the ultimate downfall of Anhedonika's cruel and despotic ruler, known only as The Lord. Now he has a part to play. His journey begins here.

Book 2: THIEF'S FORTUNE

After escaping the death and destruction of Port Peleas, Jake and Sarah have found a place to lay low for a while. Their peace, though, doesn’t last, as enemies and allies are still in hot pursuit of Alure, the sun-lady figurine they carry with them, an object thought to hold the power of restoring peace to the land of Anhedonika.  The pair will soon struggle to know who they can trust as they encounter a new set of characters and are drawn deeper into a plot to bring an end to Anhedonika’s cruel ruler, The Lord.  And now that they have found each other, they must fight to remain together as forces beyond their control threaten to tear them apart once more.
